German practice

Answer in German.

Antwort is a German course you take as a conversation. From the first minute you build sentences out loud, using words from your own job and daily life. Practise enough of them and German starts to come naturally.

Say it in German · 1 of 3

“Das ist ...” means “that is ...”, and “gut” means “good”.

That is good.

You understand more than you can say.

That gap closes one way only: by producing sentences yourself, hundreds of them, about your own life. Antwort is forty hours of exactly that, whether you are starting from the beginning or already know the basics.

Social life

Friends switch to English for you, out of kindness. So you never get to practise.

Work life

In English you lead the meeting. In German you wait for the right moment to speak, and it never comes.

Everyday life

You order correctly. Then comes one extra question, and your mind goes blank.

Answering in German is a habit, not knowledge. You build it by saying hundreds of sentences about your own life. That is the whole idea behind Antwort.

Less studying. More speaking.

Every session works the same way: you get a sentence to say, and you say it. Then the next one, a little harder.

Your turn, every twenty seconds

A short explanation, then a sentence for you to say. That is the whole lesson, again and again. You are speaking German from the first minute.

Old sentences come back

There is no separate review. What you learned yesterday returns inside today’s sentences. If you get it wrong, the coach goes back to it, then continues.

Every answer gets an answer

Say a sentence and the coach replies at once. Either it is right, or you get one line that fixes it. Your mistakes decide what comes next.

After the course, you use it

Ten phases of practice. Then you use your German in daily life: ordering, arranging, disagreeing, answering.

You practise the sentences you will actually use.

In your first minutes, Antwort asks about your work and your life. From then on, your sentences use your words.

  • A nurseIch muss die Übergabe heute noch schreiben.I still have to write the handover today.
  • A father of twoIch muss die Kinder heute noch abholen.I still have to pick up the children today.
  • A cyclistIch muss das Rad heute noch reparieren.I still have to fix the bike today.
  • A software developerIch muss den Fehler heute noch beheben.I still have to fix the bug today.
  • A new arrivalIch muss die Anmeldung heute noch machen.I still have to do the registration today.
  • A home cookIch muss das Brot heute noch backen.I still have to bake the bread today.

The same sentence, different people. The German is the same for everyone. The words in it come from your life.

Practise the way the moment allows

Antwort gives you the sentence. How you answer depends on where you are.

Tap to answer

On the bus, one thumb. Pick the right sentence from three.

Type it yourself

At a keyboard, write the sentence out. Small mistakes are fine; the coach still understands you.

Listen and repeat

On a run or in the car. Antwort says the sentence, you say it back.

Speak with the coach

In a quiet moment. Say the sentence out loud, and the coach answers you.

This will not suit everyone.

If you want grammar explained first, a textbook is better. If you want a big vocabulary fast, a flashcard app is better. If you want to answer in German without freezing, this is built for that. Grammar and vocabulary come from using them.

Try it if

  • You want to speak German, not study it.
  • You have half an hour here and there, not whole evenings.
  • One short correction is enough for you.

It is not for you if

  • You want the grammar explained first.
  • You are preparing for an exam like Goethe, ÖSD or telc.
  • You want a classroom, a live teacher and fixed times.

What you will be saying, and when

Ten phases, about four hours each. You can see the whole path from your first session.

01

Foundation

Simple words first, then want, can and must, and the German rule of putting the verb at the end.

Ich kann nicht kommen, weil ich arbeiten muss. · I cannot come because I have to work.

02

Survival conversations

Ordering, paying, asking the way, making an appointment, being politely difficult.

Ich hätte gern einen Termin am Dienstag um zehn. · I would like an appointment on Tuesday at ten.

03

Talking about yourself

Your work, your family, where you live, what your week actually looks like.

Ich arbeite seit drei Jahren in Wien. · I have been working in Vienna for three years.

04

The past

Yesterday, last week, last year: half of every real conversation.

Gestern habe ich mit meinem Chef gesprochen. · Yesterday I spoke to my boss.

05

Plans and the future

Arranging to meet, saying what will happen, changing your mind out loud.

Nächste Woche werde ich umziehen. · Next week I am going to move.

06

Opinions and reasons

Saying what you think and disagreeing politely: the part that decides how confident you sound.

Das stimmt, aber ich sehe das anders. · That is true, but I see it differently.

07

Richer sentences

Conditions, comparisons and detail, so your sentences say more.

Wenn es geht, komme ich lieber früher. · If possible, I would rather come earlier.

08

Connected speech

Hesitating, correcting yourself, asking someone to slow down. Staying in German instead of switching.

Wie sagt man das noch mal auf Deutsch? · How do you say that in German again?

09

Real conversation drills

Unscripted practice on everyday subjects, with nobody helping you plan the sentence first.

Und du, was machst du am Wochenende? · And you, what are you doing at the weekend?

10

Putting it all together

Everything from the earlier phases at once, in open conversation. No script and no set topic: you talk about whatever comes up, for as long as you want to keep it going.

Ja, gern. Sagen wir Montag um sieben? · Yes, gladly. Shall we say Monday at seven?

This is the first course. When you finish it, Antwort can stay with you as your German coach, with new practice as your German grows.

Builder behind Antwort
Kristian TanninenFounder, Antwort · ProductCTO.com

I produce AI and software solutions for a living, for companies in the US and Europe. Antwort is the product I designed for myself first: the German course I wanted and could not find. Less theory, more practice. I live in Vienna, where I could follow German long before I could answer in it. After a month with Antwort, I was answering.

Straight answers

I have started German before and stopped. Will this be any different?

One thing is visibly different: you can see the whole path from your first session, and it leads somewhere real: a conversation, held in German. The other difference you will notice in the first ten minutes: you are producing sentences, not preparing to. Take the free hour; it will tell you more than this answer can.

Is this just a chatbot?

No. The lessons, their order and what combines with what are written by a person. The AI turns them into structured interactions that adapt to your vocabulary: it phrases the prompts, fills them with words from your life, and judges your answers. It is never allowed to decide what you learn next.

Who is behind this?

Kristian Tanninen, at ProductCTO.com. Building AI and software products is what I do for a living, for companies in the US and Europe. Years of working with AI in real products is also why the model here is kept on a short leash: it phrases and judges, it does not invent your course.

Is this a course or a practice app?

Practice, on purpose. Antwort does not teach you about German; it has you producing it, hundreds of times, in sentences from your own life. Underneath the practice sits a course written by a person, so it always builds in the right order.

How long does it really take?

Forty hours of practice, in sessions of about thirty minutes, so eighty sessions in all. Three a week is roughly six months; five a week is under four. You can stop mid-sentence and resume exactly there.

Do I have to speak out loud?

Say every sentence out loud as you go; that is the method. You answer by tapping the right sentence or typing it, and the coach judges what you produced. Saying it aloud first is what turns it into a reflex.

What happens if my grammar is wrong?

You are told the sentence a German would say, in one line, and you move on. Spelling mistakes and missing umlauts are not corrected at all. This is about speaking, not orthography.

Your next conversation can be in German.

Try the first hour. If it is not for you, stop there. It costs nothing.
